The celebratory atmosphere surrounding Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory turned into tragedy when a stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 left 11 dead and 56 injured. In a swift response, Bengaluru Police arrested four individuals, including RCB's Marketing and Revenue Head, Nikhil Sosale. All have been remanded to 14-day judicial custody by the 14th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court.
Sosale’s arrest has triggered legal controversy, with him challenging the detention as "illegal and arbitrary" in the Karnataka High Court. Meanwhile, several top Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) officials, including the president and treasurer, moved the High Court seeking to quash the FIR filed against them. They have since been granted interim protection from arrest.
The incident has not only raised questions about crowd control and event planning but has also prompted judicial oversight. The High Court has taken suo motu cognisance and demanded a status report from the state government, to be reviewed on June 10.
